Why psychotherapy?

Talking to a therapist provides the opportunity to explore difficulties that you may be facing. Perhaps there are aspects of your life or yourself that you would like to change. You may have had painful or traumatic experiences that are difficult to share with others. Things that were once normal might have stopped making sense lately, or you may be aware that something in your life doesn't feel quite right at the moment. Psychotherapy aims to help with problems like these by talking them through, patiently and with care. By helping you gain insight and perspective, this process can create space to provide relief from distress and allow for the possibility of living more richly.

What is psychoanalytic psychotherapy?

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a particular approach to therapy. It encourages you to think about your own history in order to make sense of difficulties that might be presenting themselves now. It also emphasises that there are aspects of ourselves and our experiences that are difficult to notice but which nonetheless are linked in important ways to our thoughts, feelings, behaviour and desires. A psychoanalytic psychotherapist will help you to reflect on what these things might be in order to alleviate suffering and break out of unwanted habits and patterns.
